Proposition 2½, for better or worse, directly challenges taxpayers to raise rates on themselves in order to fund improved city services. Whether or not communities can afford this often comes down to demographics, and this election will be another test to see how much Melrose has shifted in the past five to seven years. Personally, I’d like Melrose to compete with wealthier communities for staff, and I’d like our real estate market to compete with wealthier communities for future residents. I understand this approach costs money, and on balance, I think the benefits of this request exceed the costs, which is why I’m voting yes.
